For once, the streets outside of Alex's home were completely empty. Her keys hung in her hand as she stepped onto the front step. She defiantly intended to lock the door when they left. As a cold breeze suddenly rushed over the already shivering girl, she stepped back inside; rather riskily leaving the door wide open. Her eyes, as anyone's would, landed straight on the man crumpled on the floor.
"We should do something about that." Alex said, flicking her eyes up to meet Caleb's. He nodded, instantaneously agreeing.
"Should we... you know... bury him?" He asked Alex. Reluctantly, the young girl shook her head. No, they wouldn't be burying the dead man. But she had considered it... briefly.
"I mean, I already killed him. We're a little past the point of respect." Stomach churning at the thought, she buried her face in her hands. A couple of moments later, she sighed and looked up, again meeting her friends worried and clearly scared eyes. "Besides... I'm not sure what it is, but it's no man. You saw the news, Caleb." Caleb raised his eyebrows, letting an exasperated sigh pass his lips.
"He-" Gianna started, but was quickly cut off by Alex.
"It. Don't make me believe I just killed a man, Gia."
"It was a man. It could've had a family..." The blonde girl spoke quietly, and seemed to shrink smaller as she did. Alexis shook her head, hoping Gianna knew what she was saying didn't help at all.
"You're talking about the same thing that sunk this teeth into a little girl!"
"I just want to know what's going on..." Caleb spoke loudly, interrupting the girls. It sounded almost as if he thought of he said it loud enough, someone would come and give a full on detailed explanation as to why a dead man forced Alexis Grey to kill him... Again. Carefully, Alex reached out, placing a pale hand onto Caleb's toned forearm.
"Guys... Help me pull him outside." Alex sighed. "Then we'll spend the night here. Maybe it'll all blow over?"
It sounded like a question that no one wanted to answer.
11:47pm.
The three friends had sat in Alexis Grey's small front room for almost the whole night. The door was locked tight, all the blinds were drawn, and the TV was so low it was close to mute. The news was on constant show. It's not like they needed to watch the news to see how bad things were becoming. Oh, no. They could hear it. Outside... Things had gone from bad... To a lot worse. The teens ears were filled with constants moans, gunshots and screams. As the gripped each others hands tight; sitting underneath the windowsill with Alex in the middle, no one dared to speak. Gia flinched as something hit Alex's door again.
"We need to get out of here, Alex." Gia whispered in a shaky voice. Alex looked at her, face blank.
"Where? We're stuck here right now." Alex prodded, on the off chance her friend had forgot there were not-so-dead people patrolling the streets like police at a festival. "I don't know what's going on outside, Gianna. But I'm pretty sure if we leave right now, we won't get far enough to even feel safe. We aren't even sure what causes you to get infected!" Caleb got into a crouch and opened the blinds slightly. Not enough for anything to see in, just enough for him to see out. He shut them again when he was done, eyes wide. The boy slumped back onto the floor with a thump.
He shook his head. "We tried waiting it out, Alex. It's just got worse. I say we get in my car and drive to your parents. They live in a pretty small place compared to London,
right?"
Alex's heart stopped.
"My dad," She whispered, jumping up out of horror whilst clamping her hand over her mouth. "He's infected. My mum said so." Alex and Gianna's faces dropped.
"No... He can't be." Gianna stated, shocked. All three of them were up now. "maybe it's a coincidence? Maybe he's just sick." She continued. Alex shook her head, tears threatening to spill. She walked over to her sofa, grabbing her phone and dialling the all too familiar number and biting her nails as it rang, hoping for someone, anyone to pick up.
"No ones answering! We need to go, now!" She shouted.
"My cars in your driveway." Caleb said evenly. "I want to see my mum too. She's close, on the way to yours." Alex nodded, shoving her phone and portable charger into her back pocket.
"Okay... How do we do this?" Gianna spoke up finally. Caleb looked at her, shrugging.
"I have an idea."
