THE STREETS WERE QUIET THAT EVENING, THE CRISP AUTUMN AIR FALLING OVER THE TOWN.
finney's converse scuffed lightly against the pavers, his hands stuffed deep in his pockets.
he had spent all evening at robin's house half-studying half-gaming, and now it was nearing 6 and he was on his way home, ready for another crappy meal and bickering with his siblings.
he wondered what drawing beau would show him today. what joke gwen would make behind their father's back that they could all giggle at.
finney picked his head up only as he turned the corner towards the house, the rain that had been pummeling down only a short few minutes ago had already stopped, leaving only puddles and wet grass in it's wake.
finney continued on, avoiding the puddles on his way until he finally reached his house, about to cross the threshold when his foot caught on something, finney letting out a short yelp as he stumbles, catching himself before he could fall the whole way.
he blinks in surprise, head turning back to find what he'd tripped over, expecting it to be just a risen paver, but he halted at the sight of a familiar teddy bear, now soaked in a puddle.
his eyebrows furrow, "florence?" he mutters, picking the bear up and looking around as though he were going to find beau running for the bear he had accidentally dropped.
but that was just the problem. beau didn't drop florence. not unless something was wrong. he brought that bear everywhere.
finney's eyes pause on the fence to the left of their house. a single balloon. a strange one.
it was black and tied around the fence.
his head tilted in confusion, but he quickly brushed it off.
finney holds the bear for another moment, eyes flicking around, but eventually he just gave a sigh. "it's probably nothing"
regardless, he keeps his hold on the bear and enters the house, gwen and their dad turning to him immediately.
"good. you're home" their dad smiled, "we're having pizza night. well, as soon as your brother gets home" he said, face scrunching as he checks his watch, "speaking of. did you see him? he was supposed to be back by 5:30"
finney looks up quickly, startled. "beau isn't home?"
gwen frowns at the way he spoke, head turning up.
"yeah. he went to the park after school?" their dad shrugged, looking back to his newspaper.
finney gulped thickly, eyes dropping to the bear in his hand.
gwen followed his gaze. "he dropped florence..?"
the two meet gazes, finney nodding slowly.
"he never drops florence.."
their dad shakes his head, "come on, kids. watch some telly and he'll be back soon. he's probably caught up at the park. if he's not back in fifteen you can go looking for him"
the two shared a look but nodded, hesitantly shuffling into the living room.
but fifteen minutes passed and there was no sign of the young boy.
and when the two siblings hurried to the park, there was no sign of him then, either.
in fact, the park was entirely empty.
no sign their little brother had ever been there at all.
that night passed in a blur of red and blue, sirens and panic.
but beau was nowhere to be seen.
they searched up and down the streets, knocked on doors and questioned anyone they could get their hands on.
two mothers reported seeing the boy alone at the park, and one man seen him walking passed his store at 5:30pm that same evening.
but no one had seen him passed that time.
like he had just..
vanished.
