𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗬 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗦, 𝗸𝗻𝘆 𝘅 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻!𝗼𝗰
𝟬𝟭𝟴, catalyst
THE FOLLOWING EVENTS MOVED IN A BLUR.
the demon escapes. tanjiro shouts after it.
rengoku talks, smile never wavering even as he steadily nears his demise.
ren hears her name, but the words go in one ear and out the other. her hands clutch at her pants, the taste of iron spilling into her mouth from the gnawing of her lip.
canon events were necessary. they must happen. if they don't, the universe threatens collapse.
so why?
why does this feel so wrong?
rengoku dying. all this grief, this loss.
it doesn't feel right.
enough, renee
ren stiffens, miguel's familiar voice snapping her from her trance as her head snaps up, his holographic figure standing before her with crossed arms.
there's a familiar twitch in his brow. annoyance.
but besides that, there seems to be something else. a deeper annoyance that could only be sparked by one particular spider.
ren gasps, "miles is back?"
a tick appears on the man's forehead, "no.."
"you're a terrible liar" ren arches a brow, "what's he doing back??"
"gwen led him back. she made the stupid mistake of visiting him on his earth, and then in pursuit of a villain in pavitr's earth, he followed her through the portal"
ren gapes, the current situation fading to a blur in surprise of that.
"and that's not even the worse thing" miguel says, now pacing angrily as he tugs at his hair.
ren frowns,
this can't be good
"miles stopped a canon event"
ren gasps, eyes wide and stomach sinking slightly.
"he stopped the police chief from being killed in pavitr's earth, and now his whole universe is beginning to collapse"
ren's face contorts,
oh, pavitr.. he adores his earth..
"that brat.. that anomaly!" miguel rages now, clearly getting in his own mind.
"miguel" ren scolds, frowning deeply. she hated his demise of miles. it wasn't his fault.
"that spider was never supposed to bite him!"
"i know that, miguel! do you think that's his fault?! it's not like he went looking for it!"
miguel just clicks his tongue, running his hands down his face in utter annoyance.
"whatever. but you, renee. you need to pull yourself together"
ren stiffens, head dropping again.
"this was a canon event. you can't let yourself be overcome with emotions. you barely know these people"
ren clenches her fists, anger simmering at that statement. "so that means i'm not allowed to mourn a good human? a person who gave their whole life to protect others? i'm not like you, miguel. i can't just push stuff like that aside. it's a canon event, whatever. i let it happen, didn't i? i didn't stop the demon, did i? god fucking forbid i feel a teeny bit sad that i just LET A MAN DIE?!"
"ren?"
the female stiffens, blood running cold.
her head snaps up. miguel was gone, but in his place stood tanjiro, face distraught and eyes distrusting.
"tanjiro.."
"you.. what? you let rengoku-san die?"
ren gasps, instantly feeling sick to her stomach. "tanjiro, i.. no, it's not like that!"
"but that's what you said, isn't it?" tanjiro sniffles, clearly trying to look confident even despite the tremble in his step.
damn you, miguel ren growls, teeth clenched.
"tanjiro i swear it's not like that.. i swear"
"no.. renee.. you let rengoku-san die.. you said it yourself, you didn't stop the demon"
tears well in ren's eyes and she resists the urge to hit herself. why is she so emotional over this?! miguel was right, she barely knows these people! why is she crying because tanjiro is mad at her?
"tanjiro.. it was a canon event! i had to!"
"no. i don't know what a 'canon event' is, but you could have stopped it! you could have saved rengoku-san!"
"tanjiro!" ren calls weakly, but tanjiro was already running away.
ren's head snaps up. overhead, a crow was flying away with a wary eye on her.
she gapes, face wrack with distraught.
"no.. nonononononono..."
this was it. her time in this universe was ruined. now, all because of miguel, she looked like nothing more than a sick freak who allowed rengoku to die for no reason at all.
sure, the hashira knew of canon events, but ren knew they would never forgive her for standing by while on of theirs was killed.
they'd kill her for this. she'd be put on trial and beheaded.
the master would understand, she knew he would. she knew he knew the true nature of canon events and possibly even the canon events of his universe, but even under his wish, the hashira would not hold the same belief.
no.
ren stood, fists clenched.
dawn was upon them now, a gentle orange light beaming over the land occupied only now by ren and rengoku's fallen body, tanjiro and the others hidden from who they perceived to be a traitor.
ren took one last glance at rengoku's body, face twisted with grief.
"i'm sorry you had to be the catalyst"
with that, she flew off into the forest, the gush of the wind drowning out her sorrows.
fuck canon.
canon events in this universe only occurred to initiate the demise of the demon king.
so, if the demon king happened to die, then no canon event need to occur until the true spiderperson of this universe shows themselves.
with a newfound resolve, renee left the demon slayer corps as a perceived traitor, and would return only their savior.
(this is NAWT the direction i had in mind, but i thought of it while writing this, so here we are!)
