YOU HAD MANAGED TO FIND THE JACKPOT AT THAT SMALL CAFE.
there were tons of ingredients and much to your luck they owned a gas oven, so it could still be used.
so using this advantage, you cooked up a yummy meal that you could store in containers for a while.
however today was a new day and after a fulfilling breakfast it was time for you to head out and to a new game.
as nervous as you were, joining a new game meant the possibility of meeting arisu, karube and chota and you would prefer to be on the track of the show rather than wandering around aimlessly with no clue where it might lead.
you toss your bag strap over your shoulder, squeezing out of the booth and exiting the store with a drink of your water, which you had refilled from some of the bottles in the no-longer working fridge at the cafe. they weren't cold but you'd rather drink room temperature water than die of dehydration, so..
you walk down the street, looking around for any signs of a new game starting. you saw one glint in the distance, puffing some air through your nose.
you were on your way there when all of a sudden..
"HEY!!"
"huh" your eyebrows raise as you turn back, staring at the tall balcony type walkway behind you.
your eyebrows shot up,
arisu!
"hey!! uh.. uhhh.. come up here, please!" he beckoned.
you tilted your head,
er.. is he asking me to come?
he beckons again and you shrug and nod,
phew, i've already met arisu! this must be the first episode, he seems frightened. it seems this is before they started any games..
you jog over to the building you assumed connected you upwards to that balcony, rubbing your chin slightly.
this was a great time for you to have joined. you're meeting arisu and his friends as the plot is starting and already have experience with a game, you smile slightly.
you head up the stairs, pausing suddenly.
ah.
you had forgotten.
you won't even understand what he says..
well, whatever.
you sigh, emerging on the balcony and spotting a slightly distressed looking arisu.
he spots you and jogs over to you.
"hey! do you know where everyone went?"
you stare dully at him, "uhh.."
he blinks.
you blink.
"sorry, man, i don't speak japanese"
he blinks in surprise,
huh? a foreigner..?
he frowns slightly, gesturing to the empty street and doing the shrug emoji as if asking why.
you purse your lips, shaking your head and shrugging.
no clue, pal
he frowned, scratching his cheek.
uhh.. do i bring her to karube and chota..? they'd be glad to see another person but he doesn't even speak japanese..
he sighs out, gesturing you to come with him.
you smile slightly and nod, internally cheering.
fuck yes, he's bringing me to meet the other two!
you trail behind the messy haired boy, picking at your white painted nails.
you hoped they liked you, even if you couldn't understand nor speak to them. you'd have to work on that. maybe they could teach you some japanese.
arisu turned back suddenly, you blinked.
"uh, before i forget" he pointed to himself, "arisu ryohei"
your lips form an 'o', "[na-" you paused,
right. they introduce their last names first
"[last name] [name]"
he smiled and nodded, continuing to walk with you following behind him.
he led you to the middle of a crossroads, you were the first people there.
"my friends will be coming back soon" he said, face-palming slightly. he had forgotten you couldn't understand him.
you both turned to the side as footsteps approached.
"oi, arisu, you found someone!"
you blink,
karube. damn he's pretty cute. arisu too
you blinked at the man.
"hey, you know what happened to everyone else?"
you just stare blankly at him, his face morphs in confusion.
"she's a foreigner, she doesn't seem to speak japanese" arisu said.
karube frowned, "seriously? the first person we find and she can't even understand us?" he grumbles.
you frown, he didn't look happy.
you stick your tongue out discreetly,
womp womp bitch.
only a moment later chota ran up, "ohh, you found someone!"
karube crosses his arms with a click of his tongue, "don't even bother, she's a foreigner"
he blinks in surprise but ignores the man, sticking out his hand, "i'm segawa chota. that's karube daikichi" (honestly don't know what their first name vs. last name is sooo)
you smile at him and nod, "i'm [last name] [name]"
"does she even know what's happening?" karube asked, annoyed.
"she doesn't know where everyone went.." arisu frowned.
"uh, game" you said, hoping that maybe they'd understand.
they all looked confused.
but that only lasted for a moment when the screen behind you shone bright, the same words being illuminated, GAME THIS WAY.
they all looked confused.
(i know i skipped them sitting down but pretend that happened before they went searchng for everyone)
"game?" karube questioned.
you nodded rapidly.
the boys all followed the arrows direction.
"over there" arisu pointed to the glowing red light"
you nodded at all of them.
they exchanged confused looks.
"lights?" chota frowned.
"somebody must be there" karube pointed out.
"game" you said again, gesturing for them to follow you there.
they seem a bit hesitant at first but eventually follow after you as you all break into a jog.
eventually you made it to the same building that was in the first episode, it had a glowing sign with the letters 'gm' and some japanese characters.
you glanced at the cars, trying to recall what arisu had said about them.
something about a bmw.. foot length.. ehhhh he can do that on his own
they all glanced around, confused.
"in. we have to go in" you pointed to the doors of the building.
the boys all looked up at the shining screen with big, black words. 'game' alongside some characters.
a sort of arrow lights up ahead, the boys flinch slightly.
you glance at them, walking ahead.
they exchange hesitant glances before deciding to follow you, what did it mean by game anyway?
hm, so this is the life or death game right? or whatever it was called.. the on with the doors. ahh crap i don't even remember the doors.. the first one was death, right? and then.. live? agh i don't remember.. it's alright, i can rely on arisu's smarts on this one..
the boys peeked around the corner you had already turned, watching as you inspected the ledge and the phones on it.
you smiled, there was a cute pink phone case, you picked that one up and stepped back, glancing at the trio and nodding with your head for them to come.
they each grabbed one, the facial recognition chiming.
"it's got face recognition" chota said, startled.
"do we use these phones?" karube questioned.
the three glanced at you, it seemed you knew what you were doing. like you had done this before.
"there's no signal" arisu pointed out uneasily.
"the outgoing call function is disabled"
the phones dinged, the home screen being replaced by a white screen with words, yours in english.
'game. please wait' along with a timer.
this one was three of.. clubs, right? the cards not here, it must be by the exit
"please wait for the game to commence. currently, there are four participants. one minute remaining until registration closes"
you lean against the wall, unable to understand what the announcer was saying but recalling it being something about how many players and how long left, nothing important.
"what the hell is this?" arisu frowned.
"a game" a womans voice spoke from down the hall, the boys all gasped and turned their heads.
you glanced over,
right, shibuki..
"huh.. another person" chota said breathily.
"hey. uh, do you know where everyone went?" karube asked.
shibuki ignored his question, entering and walking passed the lasers.
she made eye contact with you, who looked more calm then the boys. a knowing gliny flashed in her eye, she nodded at you and you nodded back. you had both participated in a game before.
she walks right up to chota, reaching in his breast pocket and pulling out his id card.
she then tossed it back through the invisible lasers, it being zapped instantly.
the men all gasp.
"what the hell was that?" arisu questions.
"a laser?" chota winced, staring down at his decimated face on the photo card.
"cross the borderline, and you'll never return" shibuki said, the men shudder.
"you have no choice but to play the game"
they all stare at the card for a minute before shibuki breaks her gaze, stepping over and grabbing a phone.
arisu walks right up to the borderline, a zapping sound resounding as he stepped a half inch from the line, the boys all flinched.
you pull arisu back by the back of his shirt, giving him a disapproving look, "you'll lose your nose"
shibuki's eyes flickered to you in question, she knew you looked like a foreigner, but you were speaking.. english, was it?
"you heard what she said, don't do it" karube told him.
"oh!" a girl cried, everyone glanced upwards. a young high school girl at the end of the hall. "i'm so relieved" she sighed out, "jeez, i thought there was no one else"
the men all yell in panic as she approaches the borderline, eyes widening as she enters through with a light ding.
you give the girl a sympathetic look, knowing she was going to die in only a few short minutes. you wondered for a moment if you should save her, but you had no way to explain why she couldn't open the door and all you could do would be physically holding her back, and you don't really want to look super suspicious.
the girl looks confused at the guys panic.
"my condolences" shibuki says, you side-eye her slightly. shibuki hands her a phone.
the phones all chime at the same time, you all look down.
"registration is now closed. the game will now close"
"game?"
"game, 'dead or alive'"
the same words ping on your screen.
"difficulty, three of clubs"
"three of clubs?" chota speaks in confusion.
"type and difficulty" you explain despite knowing they won't understand.
the highschool girl glances at you.
"what does that mean?"
'rule, select the correct door within the stipulated time frame'
"what?"
'clear condition = leave the building within the time limit'
the elevator dings, doors opening.
you winced at the bright white inside,
man, does everything have to be white? my eyes are hurting..
you and shibuki enter the elevator first.
"you'll die if you just stand there" she furrowed her eyebrows.
the highschool girl followed you in next, shortly then the trio.
you bit your lip, looking down,
this game is relatively easy in the sense i don't really have to do anything.. i can rely on arisu since i know he figures it out. all this is is picking between the two doors. once it gets to the next game i'll have to be more active..
the elevator doors closed and so begun the start of the game.
